Overview
It is the year 2030, and the stage is the capital of Japan, Chou-Tokyo. Through "Buddyfight", humans have started cultural interactions with residents from other worlds called "Affinity Dimensions". Buddyfight is a game with selected humans as the "Buddyfighter", and residents from the other world as the partner (known as "Buddy Monster"). These battles have high significance and sometimes it is even used to decide the fate of a nation, and naturally there are those who seek to use the Buddy Monsters for evil purposes.

Season 1
The series takes place during the year 2030, in Choutokyo, Japan. Through the game "Buddyfight", humanity is able to interact with the residents of other worlds: Buddy Monsters. Chosen humans (known as "Buddyfighters") become "Buddies" with Buddy Monsters to play the game. There are those who choose to use the power of Buddy Monsters for evil, but the "Buddy Police" puts a stop to these criminals. Gao Mikado is a student at Aibo Academy, and is a very nice guy, even if he doesn't look like it. His life changes when he meets the son of the hero of the Dragon World: Drum Bunker Dragon (whom he nicknamed 'Drum') that he drew from a pack in class one day.

Gao, Roars!
On Earth, Tasuku Ryuenji, a young prodigy member of the Buddy Police, busts a fugitive in a Buddyfight as Gao Mikado watches the scene unfold on TV. On his way home, Gao saves a boy, Kiri Hyoryu, from a group of bullies using his Aiki-jūjutsu skills and returns home only to be scolded by his mother Suzumi. The next day, Gao goes to school, Aibo Academy, and meets up with his classmates: Kuguru Uki, Baku Omori, and Noboru Kodo. In class, he and his classmates open booster packs of Future Card Buddyfight when Gao suddenly pulls a Buddy Rare card, which summons Drum Bunker Dragon Fang Slade Terrestrial the 13th from the Dragon World. Drum's appearance means that Gao is to become buddies with him, although Drum is reluctant after having monitored Gao's actions from the Dragon World up to his point. Then, Tasuku and his buddy Jackknife Dragon arrive, and Tasuku gives Gao a Core Deck Case in recognition of him becoming buddies with a monster, officially making Gao a Buddyfighter. Tasuku takes his leave until Gao decides to challenge him to a Buddyfight.
