في فرنسا أوائلَ القرنِ التاسعِ عشرَ، كانتِ الأمُّ الوحيدةُ تكابدُ مشقةَ الحياةِ، تسيرُ معَ ابنتِها كوزيتَ تطلبُ الرزقَ ومأوىً، فيصُدُّهُما الناسُ إذ لا يرغبونَ في استئجارِ النساءِ اللاتي لهنَّ ولدٌ. حتى إذا بشِّرتْ برغدِ العيشِ في المدينةِ الكبرى، فارقتِ ابنتَها وائتمنَتْها إلى من يَرْعاها، راجيةً أن تكتسبَ ما يقوتهما.
Being a single mother is hard in early 19th Century France. When young Cosette was traveling with her mother trying to find a job and a place to live, they were always shunned away because very few employers hire single mothers. When she is promised with the prosperity of working in the big city, Cosette is separated from her mother in the hopes a caretaker will watch over her while her mother earns some money.
Plot
Cosette, daughter of the unfortunate Fantine, suffers under the cruel Thénardiers. Jean Valjean, a former convict disguised as Monsieur Madeleine, seeks redemption while Inspector Javert pursues him.

Fantine and Cosette
Fantine unsuccessfully searches for a job in Montfermeil alongside her three-year-old daughter, Cosette, and eventually drops Cosette off under the care of the Thénardier family, while she travels to the economically-thriving town of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Little does Fantine know, the Thénardiers are a wicked and abusive family, who force Cosette into hard labor, while Cosette waits for the return of her mother.
