تجري احداث القصة في عام 2138 عندما يقرر إغلاق إحدى أكثر ألعاب تقمص الأدوار شهرة على الإنترنت والتي تدعى يغدراسيل. رغم ذلك الشاب “موموناغا” أحد اللاعبين المخضرمين يرفض تسجيل الخروج ، منتظرا بمفرده نهاية اللعبة ، لكن بعد مرور وقت طويل على الوقت المحدد للإغلاق ، لم يتم فصله منها. ليتضح له لاحقا أن شخصيات اللعبة تبدأ بإدراك وعيها تدريجيًا ، ليقرر استخدام مهاراته ليكون سيدا جديدا للعبة.

In the year 2138, virtual reality gaming is booming. Yggdrasil, a popular online game is quietly shut down one day. However, one player named Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as "the most powerful wizard." The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) beginning to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.

On the night his favorite MMORPG is scheduled to be shut down, veteran player Momonga stays logged in until the clock hits zero. The screen goes dark for only a few moments before he finds himself completely immersed in the world of Yggdrasil. Left with all of his character’s devastating powers, total dominion over his NPCs, and nothing better to do…Momonga decides to take over the world.

Momonga is a regular salaryman who leads a guild in an DMMO-RPG known as Yggdrasil. After twelve years of playing the game, the servers are finally shutting down. Momonga logs in for the last time, seeing the game to its end. However, after the clock strikes midnight, nothing changes.
